Chandigarh: App to link district hospitals with PGI for stroke treatment – ET HealthWorld

Chandigarh: In a major help for stroke patients, Chandigarh is likely to become the first city in the country to have a system where a tertiary hospital will be connected to district and sub-district hospitals with a communication application ‘Strokenet Chandigarh’, doctors from PGI have claimed.

The mobile-based application will manage stroke treatment in hospitals which do not have neurologists or the facility of CT scan. This is expected to shorten the treatment time and salvage patients within the golden hour/window period of 4.5 hours.

PGI, which already has the hub and spoke model with the district hospital GMSH-16, is working to rope in the civil hospitals into the model. Code stroke, which is integrated with the application, is an automated calling system which provides time of onset of stroke among patients coming to the hospital. It will alert the stroke team of the spoke and the hub team which will be prepared to receive the patients.

“We are working on having a dedicated mobile-based application which will be used for communication among the healthcare workers for any such case in hospitals,” said Prof Dheeraj Khurana, department of neurology in PGI.

This application has a dedicated code stroke which will be activated and alert the teams at the hospitals where stroke cases come,” said Prof Dheeraj Khurana, department of neurology in PGI.

Three years back, the institute had started a hub and spoke model with GMSH-16 to help hundreds of patients. PGI is the hub which will be linked with civil hospitals in Sector 22, 45 and Manimajra in addition to GMSH-16 through the application. “There are many cases of stroke which come to the civil hospitals and only GMSH-16 has a CT scan which is required for the stroke treatment. Once such a patient will come, the code stroke will be activated in the spoke hospitals. While those who have to be sent to the PGI shall be based on the algorithms prepared in the application,” said Prof Dheeraj.
