BERLIN—Russian opposition leader Alexei Navalny, who was poisoned with the nerve agent Novichok, was woken up from a medically induced coma and is responsive, Berlin’s Charité hospital said Monday.

Mr. Navalny, who was flown to Berlin from Russia for treatment with the help of the German government on Aug. 22, could still suffer long-term damage from the weapons-grade poison, the hospital said in a statement.

The high-profile critic of President Vladimir Putin was put into an induced coma and ventilated after arriving in Germany. He is now being weaned off mechanical ventilation as his condition improves, according to the clinic.

Mr. Navalny’s wife, who is in Berlin, authorized the clinic to reveal medical information about his condition to the press, the clinic said.
