Vehicles washed away, roads flooded as rain batters Hyderabad | Watch

Incessant, heavy rainfall for the last three days in Hyderabad has thrown life out of gear in the city with roads flooded or waterlogged as rainwater entered low-lying areas.

The weather department has issued a red alert for Telangana districts and predicted heavy to very heavy rains in most places across the state.

As heavy rains lashed Hyderabad and other parts of Telangana on Monday and Tuesday, the roads turned into pools with vehicles submerged. LIVE UPDATES HERE

In a video shared by news agency ANI on Twitter on Wednesday, a car is seen being swept away by rainwater in Dammaiguda area of Hyderabad.

The news agency also shared visuals from some of the worst-affected areas in Telangana. In one of the photos, a car is submerged in rainwater.

According to official data on rainfall (from 8.30 am to 9 pm on Tuesday), Singapur Township in Medchal Malkajgiri district received 292.5 mm of rainfall, followed by 250.8 mm of rainfall at Verkat Palle in Yadadri-Bhongir district.

Many localities in the Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC) limits received very heavy to extremely heavy rainfall, official sources said. The provisional average rainfall in GHMC was 98.9 mm, they said.

11 killed in rain-related incidents

At least 11 people have died in Hyderabad in the past 48 hours following incessant rains that lashed several parts of the state.

Nine persons died when a boundary wall collapsed in Mohammedia Hills in Bandlaguda due to the heavy rains. Some boulders fell on the compound walls of two houses, killing eight people on the spot and injuring four persons. The injured are being treated, a police official said.

In a separate incident, a 40-year-old woman and her 15-year-old daughter died after the roof of their old house collapsed in Ibrahimpatnam area in Hyderabad on Tuesday due to heavy rains, police said.

District administration’s appeal

The district administration in Hyderabad has appealed to the people not to venture out until the water level in rivulets and the flooding receded, according to an official release.

In its weather warning for Telangana, the Met Centre in Hyderabad said thunderstorm accompanied by lightning is very likely to occur at isolated places over Telangana on October 14.
