UP: 80-year-old priest beaten to death for refusing to give money to drunk man; accused held

According to police on Sunday, an elderly priest was allegedly beaten to death by a man, who was in an inebriated condition, for refusing to give him money to buy liquor.

According to police on Sunday, an elderly priest was allegedly beaten to death by a man, who was in an inebriated condition, for refusing to give him money to buy liquor.

The incident took place in Gulaur village on Saturday night when the 80-year-old victim, Ramchandra Das, was returning from a neighbouring village. The man came up to him in an inebriated condition and asked for money to buy liquor. When the priest refused, he beat him up with a stick, and fled from the spot, police said.

The victim was admitted to a hospital where he succumbed to his injuries on Sunday. Angry villagers have blocked the Azamgarh-Gorakhpur road, and kept the body there.

On Sunday, senior Superintendent of Police, Sudhir Kumar Singh, said that the accused was arrested on Saturday, and has been sent to jail.
