Set ablaze by her employer for resisting a rape attempt, a 13-year-old tribal girl succumbed to severe burn injuries in Telangana on Thursday night. She had been undergoing treatment at a private hospital in Hyderabad for almost a month.

According to police, the 13-year-old tribal girl was employed as a domestic help at the home of the accused in Telangana’s Khammam town. On September 18, the accused attempted to molest the child and when she resisted, poured petrol on her and set her ablaze. She suffered 70 per cent burns as a result.

The matter was brought to the attention of Telangana Police only after the girl was admitted to a private hospital in Hyderabad for treatment of severe burn injuries.

Khammam commissioner of Police Tafseer Iqbal confirmed to news agency PTI, “She died on Thursday night while undergoing treatment in a private hospital in Hyderabad.” The commissioner also said that sections of the IPC invoked against the accused corresponding to attempt to murder will now be altered to murder.

Taking cognizance of the matter, the Telangana State Human Rights Commission (TSHRC) had also sought a report from the Khammam police in this regard. The commission also found that the girl was initially treated for her burns at a private hospital without informing the police, and even her own family.
