Delhi Capitals defeated Rajasthan Royals by 13 runs to register their 6th win of the IPL 2020 season and in the process also occupied the top spot in the 8-team IPL 2020 points table. Wednesday’s performance by Delhi Capitals was a collective one as the team held their nerves to emerge victorious in the final moments of the game. The only concern from the match was their captain Shreyas Iyer’s shoulder injury which he incurred in the 5th over of the 2nd innings.
Delhi Capitals opener Shikhar Dhawan, who top-scored for Delhi with 57 runs, came in place of captain Iyer in the post-match presentation ceremony. When asked about an update on Shreyas Iyer’s injury, Dhawan said that the right-hand batsman was in pain but his shoulder was moving. The clarity on the nature of the injury will be more tomorrow, Dhawan added.
“Shreyas is in a bit of pain. We will know more tomorrow. His shoulder is moving, touch wood,” Dhawan said.
During the last ball of the 5th over Shreyas Iyer dived to his left at mid-off to save a probable boundary from Ben Stokes but landed in an awkward position. Iyer has visibly in a lot of pain as he left the field immediately. In the later phases of the game Shreyas Iyer was spotted watching the match from the dugout.
Talking about the match Shikhar Dhawan further said that Delhi capitals always knew that Rajasthan Royals have no depth in their batting and that they would be under pressure after the departure of their top-order. As per plan Rajasthan’s top four had departed even before putting 100 runs on the board. The batsmen who walked in next crumbled under pressure to hand Delhi the victory.
“I am glad that we won this game. Coming back into this was a great team effort. Quite enjoyed it. We always believed we had a chance. We knew their batting is not that deep. We knew we could get into them if we got the top order,” Shikhar Dhawan said.
The 34-year-old praised the team’s bowling unit which has been brilliant time and again in the death overs. Man-of-the-Match Anrich Nortje and debutant Tushar Deshpande took 2 wickets each in the match, while Rabada with one scalp in the game took his wicket taking streak to 23 in IPL now (at least one wicket in consecutive matches). Spinners Ravichandran Ashwin and Axar Patel also took the vital wickets of Steve Smith and Sanju Samson, respectively.
“And we have got experience in the bowling. Now we have got a gun bowler in Anrich. And Tushar bowled smartly too, bowling slower balls, making them hit to the bigger boundary. The Courage he showed, line and length he bowled was amazing”.
