India’s coronavirus tally nears 75 lakh with 61,871 new infections, deaths cross 1.14 lakh

India reported 61,871 new coronavirus cases in last 24 hours, taking the country’s tally to 74,94,552, the Union health ministry said on Sunday.

The number of deaths due to Covid-19 also increased by 1,033 to 1,14,031, according to the latest health bulletin.

Meanwhile, the total active coronavirus cases in India stands at 7,83,311 and the total cured/discharged/migrated cases are at 65,97,210.

According to PTI, Delhi recorded 35 Covid-19 fatalities on Saturday, taking the death toll to 5,981, while 3,259 fresh cases pushed the infection tally to over 3.27 lakh, authorities said.

Also, Maharashtra’s Covid-19 tally increased to 15,86,321 with 10,259 new cases on Saturday, a health official said. The state also reported 250 deaths, taking its death toll to 41,965.

In Assam, the Covid-19 tally crossed the 2 lakh-mark with 672 new cases, while 12 more fatalities pushed the death toll to 865, Health Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma said.

Meanwhile, Odisha’s Covid-19 tally mounted to 2,66,345 as 2,196 more people, including a ruling BJD MP, tested positive for the infection, a health official said. 17 more patients, including a policeman in Bhubaneswar, succumbed to the infection, pushing the state’s coronavirus death toll to 1,121, PTI quoted him as saying.

The coronavirus tally in West Bengal mounted to 3,17,053 on Saturday after the state reported a record spike of 3,865 fresh cases, maintaining a rising trend for the fifth consecutive day, the health department said in a bulletin. The death toll rose to 5,992 as 61 more people succumbed to the disease.

Rajasthan recorded 12 more fatalities due to the novel coronavirus on Saturday, taking the Covid-19 death toll in the state to 1,735, according to a health department bulletin.

According to the health ministry’s update on Saturday, India’s active number of coronavirus cases had declined to 8 lakh for the first time in one-and-a-half months.

India also has one of the lowest coronavirus deaths per million population in the world, as the country registered less than 1,000 fatalities daily since October 4, the union health ministry said on Saturday.
