In the winter months, people with arthritis often face increased discomfort due to the cold weather that exacerbates their symptoms. Arthritis is a disease that includes pain, swelling and stiffness in the joints.
Arthritis is of two types. The first relates to inflammation like rheumatoid arthritis, ankylosing spondylitis, and lupus, which are degenerative. The second type is osteoarthritis, which is a common type of arthritis, affecting millions of people across the world.
As the temperature gets low, this condition intensifies with increased pain and stiffness and needs to be managed.
Speaking to IndiaToday. In earlier, Dr Naval Mendiratta, a rheumatologist at Fortis Memorial Research Institute, Gurugram, said that people often have morning sickness because their hands don’t work immediately after waking up.
Here are some ways to manage arthritis pain in winter:
Stay warm: Staying warm is crucial. Dressing in layers with hats, gloves, and scarves can provide much-needed warmth. Using electric heating pads or blankets indoors can keep the body cosy, especially during rest periods. Soaking in a hot bath can also relieve stiff joints.
Exercise: Physical activity should not be neglected. Regular exercise maintains flexibility and supports heart health, which is beneficial for managing arthritis. Indoor workouts can raise body temperature, helping to alleviate joint inflammation and pain.
Hydration: Proper hydration is essential as it aids in producing synovial fluid, a natural lubricant that prevents bones from rubbing together. Carrying a reusable water bottle ensures that one stays hydrated throughout the day.
No painkillers: Although over-the-counter medications like acetaminophen or ibuprofen can offer relief, consulting with a healthcare provider for personalised advice is advisable. Additionally, maintaining a healthy diet with anti-inflammatory foods can support overall well-being.
No Ayurvedic practices: Dr Mendirratta had also suggested not indulging in any Ayurvedic solutions for joint pain.
Self-management education workshops and physical therapy are also valuable resources for learning how to manage arthritis pain effectively.
