Myanmar crisis: India urges max restraint at UN

While condoling loss of lives in Myanmar, India has urged maximum restraint and called for release of detained leaders. These remarks were made by India’s Permanent Representative at UN TS Tirumurti at a special closed door session on Myanmar held on Wednesday.

However, the senior diplomat also called for greater engagement with the Myanmar establishment to resolve the situation peacefully.

In a series of tweets on his remarks at the session, Tirumurti stated: “Condemn violence, Condole loss of lives, Urge maximum restraint, Our steadfast commitment to democratic transition, Release of detained leaders, Welcome @ASEAN efforts.”

  • “Situation to be resolved peacefully, Need greater engagement, Meet the hopes and aspirations of the people and Extend assistance to Rakhine state development programme,” he further tweeted.

It may be recalled that India has been at the forefront of development support programme at the Rakhine State.

At the closed door meet, the UN envoy on Myanmar urged the security council to intervene in the escalating crisis, warning of the risk of civil war and an imminent “bloodbath” as the junta violently represses pro-democracy protests.

“I appeal to this council to consider all available tools to take collective action and do what is right, what the people of Myanmar deserve, and prevent a multidimensional catastrophe in the heart of Asia,” special envoy Christine Schraner Burgener told the closed-door session.

She said she remained open for dialogue with the junta, but added: “If we wait only for when they are ready to talk, the ground situation will only worsen. A bloodbath is imminent.”

Ahead of the closed door meet Tirumurti told news agency PTI that India has “been a bridge” in a polarised UN Security Council, narrowing differences and helping shape the Council’s statements, discussions on Afghanistan and Myanmar, pushing for greater meeting of minds to address humanitarian crisis in Syria and focusing on terrorism.
