CBI studying 36 cases of ‘unnatural deaths’ in West Bengal

The Central Bureau of Investigation, which is probing post-poll violence in West Bengal, is studying at least 36 cases of “unnatural deaths” which were not registered as murder by the state police, people close to the development said on Friday.

These are in addition to the murder cases mentioned in an August 19 Calcutta High Court verdict ordering the CBI probe.

The CBI has so far registered 11 FIRs and taken over investigation into these cases, which were earlier registered at different police stations, sources at the agency said. These included a case at Bankura, where the house of a man was allegedly attacked by 30 people who murdered him and also sexually harassed the female members there. On Friday, the CBI filed an FIR on an alleged rape in Murshidabad district.

Meanwhile, a 16-member CBI team visited the houses of two BJP workers in Nadia district who were allegedly murdered in May, after the assembly election that the Trinamool Congress had won. The officials talked to the family members of Palash Mondal at Krishnanagar and Dharma Mondal at Chapra, as well as the locals. The whole process was video-graphed.

Last week, the agency had written to the state police chief, seeking details of all cases pertaining to the post-poll violence.

One of the cases registered Thursday was on the alleged murder of a BJP worker, Avijit Sarkar, at central Kolkata’s Beliaghata area. CBI officials recorded the statement of Sarkar’s mother and brother.

The local police had allegedly refused to register his brother’s complaint after Sarkar’s death on May 2.

The FIRs have been registered under IPC sections related to murder, attempt to murder, rape, Arms Act, trespassing and kidnapping.
