Sainsbury’s hit by card issues

Sainsbury’s has confirmed that problems with its card payment system are affecting some same-day deliveries and some in-store payments.

Complaints by customers on social media indicate widespread frustration at card terminals not working. One customer said shopping was being left around the shop after people were unable to pay, and some stores are taking only cash.

The UK’s second largest supermarket said the issue has been intermittent since Thursday morning and that it is still working to resolve it.

It is unclear how many stores and shoppers have been affected by the outage.

With the weekend approaching, shoppers out on Thursday expressed their frustration on social media with the grocery chain.

The store has been responding to some shoppers directly on social media.

A Sainsbury’s spokesperson said: “A network issue is intermittently affecting Smart Shop, some card payments in our stores and some of our same day delivery orders.

“We’re sorry for the inconvenience this may cause and we are working hard to fix it.”

The Sainsbury’s SmartShop app allows customers to scan items as they shop to reduce checkout wait times.

In March, Sainsbury’s suffered technical problems when an overnight software update error left stores unable to take contactless payments.

At the time, weekend home deliveries were affected.

On Thursday, stores affected include in major cities such as Manchester and Birmingham, with some people posting images of signs reading “Cash Only, No Contactless” outside stores.
