BBC Scotland HQ evacuated after fire breaks out

Firefighters arrived at the building at Pacific Quay shortly after 06:30

Fire crews have tackled an early morning blaze at BBC Scotland’s headquarters in Glasgow.

BBC Radio Scotland Breakfast was taken off air, switching to pre-recorded music and breakfast television news bulletins from Scotland were suspended.

The Pacific Quay building, next to the River Clyde, was evacuated for two hours after a fire alarm sounded at about 06:30. All staff exited safely.

The Scottish Fire and Rescue Service (SFRS) said an air conditioning unit had caught fire in a plant room on the fifth floor of the building at roof level.

Firefighters arrived within minutes of the alarm sounding with at least seven fire engines at the scene.

Flames on roof

Flames could be seen through windows on the top floor of the building

It is understood the fire was discovered by a member of security staff who raised the alarm.

An orange glow of flames could be seen through windows next to the illuminated BBC Scotland sign on the south side of the building.

BBC Radio Scotland was back on air at about 08:30 when staff returned to the building.

A BBC Scotland spokesperson said: “The blaze was contained and we’re grateful to the emergency services for their swift response.

“All our colleagues are safe and well, and our services are now back on-air. Thanks to our listeners and viewers for their patience while we restored their programmes.”
