Your Weekend Planner September 4: Mumbai vs Kangana, but Wakanda Forever

Dear Reader,

If you can stay off social media, consider it a blessing. The ones who are not as lucky will tell you why. The battlegrounds have now shrunk to your mobile screen, with salvos being fired on Twitter timelines, and this time around, looks like it’s Kangana Ranaut vs Mumbaikars. Ranaut stirred up a storm by calling Mumbai ‘Pakistan occupied Kashmir’, and the Shiv Sena quickly hit back calling her – wait for it – a ‘mental case‘. Both Shiv Sena’s Sanjay Raut and Kangana Ranaut have antagonised many people on and off social media. And while Ranaut roared she would return to Mumbai on September 9, we’ll keep a close watch on airport gates and Twitter timelines for all the action.

From Mumbai, to Wakanda. King T’Challa bid an untimely farewell to his fans all over the world. Chadwick Boseman was just 43. Colon cancer took our beloved Black Panther away, leaving devastated fans joining for a virtual salute: Wakanda Forever. Our former President Pranab Mukherjee also left the world this week. A lot has been written about the life and times of India’s tallest leader, but here’s Mukherjee’s daughter Sharmishtha on her ‘persistent grudge’ against her father: A Daughter Reminisces.

That must have brought a smile to your lips. What will make that smile a little wider is a recipe of an Oreo cake by Bill Gates, which you can try your hand at this weekend (or just bake whichever cake recipe you’ve got close at hand). From the bookshelf our pick this week is Eat Pray Love (sorry, we’re falling back on food a lot more these days since all good things are cancelled in 2020, the Corona Year). There’s an avalanche of options to stream on OTT, so take your pick. And choose well. Or just sit back with Black Panther one more time.

Have a good weekend.

Here’s your Weekend Planner!

WHAT’S TRENDING?

Wakanda Forever. That’s it. The world mourned on Saturday after Chadwick Boseman’s family confirmed in a statement that Black Panther is no more. “Such a brutal loss,” Ryan Reynolds said in a post on Twitter. We couldn’t agree more. In fact, we cannot agree with destiny on this note as well. Boseman was diagnosed with colon cancer four years ago but never spoke of it in public.

Three days later, former President of India Pranab Mukherjee died on Monday after a prolonged illness. The 84-year-old veteran Congressman was in a deep state of comatose due to complications following a difficult surgery.

Tributes, meanwhile, poured in for Chadwick Boseman and Pranab Mukherjee. Amul posted doodles. An artist from Bengal painted the smallest portrait of India’s tallest leader. Sand animator Manas Kumar Sahoo also remembered Pranab Mukherjee with his sand animation.

Let’s cut to the chase now. The government has banned 118 more mobile apps including PUBG in a fresh move against Chinese mobile phone applications. Winner winner, unfortunately, no chicken dinner. Memes flooded social media soon after the decision was announced. Nagpur Police also issued a ‘Stay at home’ message amid the coronavirus pandemic with a PUBG twist.

PUBG apart, India isn’t done with humming the tune of Rasode Mein Kaun Thaa. Assam Police busted a drug racket over the week and their viral post was framed along the lines of Yashraj Mukhate’s rap. PIB (Press Information Bureau) in Maharashtra also shared a meme featuring Kokilaben so as to promote healthy eating habits.

As for our usual coronavirus katha, there is nothing new here. In fact, it’s worse as India reported over 80,000 cases on Wednesday and Thursday each. So far, India has recorded over 37 lakh novel coronavirus cases. In case you were hoping to step out for a visit here and there, don’t even think about it.

Stay at home. That’s it. Upset? Don’t be. Head to our next section and we are sure you will end up with a big smile.

SOMETHING TO MAKE YOU SMILE

Pandas. There are no blues that pandas can’t shoo away. So, here is an oh-so-adorable video of panda twins celebrating their first birthday together at Berlin Zoo. They got a special frozen cake as well. Check out this video:

Closer home, a baby elephant was in an absolutely playful mood at her naming ceremony in Karnataka. Shivani, the baby elephant, enjoyed playing with water on her special day. Her video went viral and spread oodles of joy.

Meanwhile, netizens couldn’t stop laughing after a woman caught a goat eating letters from a mailbox in Alabama, US. Some people hoped she ate junk mail!

And lastly, we have a video that will make you cry happy tears! A woman reunited with her pet cat getting separated during Beirut blast last month. The emotional moment was captured on camera and instantly tugged at netizens’ hearts.

ON THE MENU, THIS WEEK

With the global novel coronavirus pandemic far from over, staying at home to stop the spread of the virus is the ideal situation right now. But this means that all the special occasions, like birthdays have to be celebrated inside our homes. Well, if you are someone who is celebrating their birthday at home, maybe this recipe of a delicious cake by Bill Gates, which he made for his friend Warren Buffet, will cheer you up. The billionaire philanthropist made a delicious and chocolaty Oreo cake for his friend’s birthday and you can also whip it up for a special occasion.

DON’T FORGET TO WORK OUT

We are back again to tell you how your favourite celebrities worked out last week and to inspire you to exercise as well. Yoga seems to be a hit with a lot of people. Designer Masaba Gupta has been quite vocal about her love for morning yoga and revealed that she has been working out every day in the last month with a post-workout video. She looked radiant.

Esha Gupta also belongs to this category. The actress showed how to do Gomukhasana.

Hina Khan, on the other hand, is a fan of Pilates and treadmill. But she can also nail a headstand. How did you exercise this week?

FROM THE BOOKSHELF

Sounds like a plan, doesn’t it?

Since we are talking about food, while you are munching on the super yummy chocolate Oreo cake, you can pick up Elizabeth Gilbert’s Eat Pray Love. You can enjoy this brilliant tale of self-discovery of a woman after she suffers heartbreak while enjoying your slice of cake. The memoir chronicles the author’s trip in search of herself across Italy, India and Indonesia. The book is an inspiring journey that will remind you to travel more, hope more, fall in love, take risks and explore the world. The book was also made into a movie starring Julia Roberts.

FASHIONABLY YOURS

FF India tday

What Bollywood teachers taught us about fashion.

Ahead of Teacher’s Day, in this week’s Fashion Friday, we take a look at the super elegant teachers of Bollywood and their sense of style. From Sushmita Sen’s iconic chiffon sarees and sleeveless blouses in Main Hoon Na to Kareena Kapoor Khan’s pretty kurtis and ethnic style statements in Kurbaan, here’s a list of our favourite filmy teachers and every little detail of their impeccable wardrobe on screen.

SUSHANT SINGH RAJPUT KI KAHAANI, SABKI ZUBAANI

Sushant Singh Rajput’s family has made it very clear that no books, TV shows or films will be made on the actor’s life, and those who still go ahead will be penalised. Given it came in a statement from their lawyer Vikas Singh, it ought to be taken seriously. Par yeh kahaani already kaafi filmi hai, kya karein? Take for instance the very statement from Vikas Singh, where he said that the family now thinks Sushant Singh Rajput was murdered, a sprint from their earlier stance of abetment to suicide (against Rhea Chakraborty, of course). Did they, by extension, now call Rhea a murderer? Umm, no, but media trials actually pointed at that. Which lead to several PILs and a Bombay High Court hearing to decide if this was, in fact, actually affecting the probe. Who better to talk about that than the CBI? But, you’ve got to wait till next week for their side.

SUSHANT SINGH RAJPUT DEATH CASE: ALL YOU NEED TO KNOW

Meanwhile, India Today accessed Dr Suzanne Walker’s statement to Mumbai Police, recorded on July
16, which stated the actor was suicidal, that he stopped taking his meds, and that Rhea had informed her of the same. Earlier, Dr Kersi Chavda‘s statement had also revealed something similar. So, SSR was depressed. But KK Singh knew nothing about it. Yet Priyanka, Sushant’s sister, told him to take meds. Oh, we are confused again.

Yet another confusing area of this probe is the one which Narcotics Control Bureau is handling. 5 drug peddlers are under NCB’s scanner, as are Rhea and Showik. Today the NCB raided the Chakraborty house in Juhu, Mumbai, as well as Samuel Miranda’s Sahar, Mumbai home. Newer names are being dropped and taking the centre stage every day, and we’re just playing keep up.

On that note, here’s another name – Bunty Sajdeh, CEO of Cornerstone. That should ring two bells. One, Cornerstone is a talent management company which at one point handled Sushant’s work, and the same company Disha Salian was working with. Two, Bunty Sajdeh is Sohail Khan’s brother-in-law. Bunty was grilled twice by the CBI, primarily to understand if there’s any link between Sushant and Disha’s deaths.

Right outside the realm of the real action, Kangana Ranaut is, well, being Kangana Ranaut. In one tweet, she said she feared Mumbai Police more than the movie mafia goons. So, Sanjay Raut said, alright then, don’t come back to Mumbai. Kangana then tweeted that Mumbai feels like Pakistan occupied Kashmir to her. Raut again said, “Kangana Ranaut is a mental case. Let her go to PoK.” Yup, the usual stuff.

Now, a little bit about actual cinema. Monday Masala was all about Stree as it completed 2 years. Tuesday Trivia told you how Akshay Kumar was replaced by Ajay Devgn in Phool Aur Kaante. Wahiyat Wednesday was dedicated to the same Akshay’s Joker. Okay, we’re sorry we reminded you of that one. We will make up for it in the next section.
