Your Weekend Planner September 11: Rheality-show high

Dear Reader,

For many, this week is ending on a strange high. No, not the kind of high that sent Rhea Chakraborty to jail, but the high on seeing Rhea being denied bail. The actress, along with her brother Showik and four drug peddlers, were told by a sessions court in Mumbai today that they would be in judicial custody till September 22. So while many people are celebrating the fact that Rhea’s bail plea was rejected, many from Bollywood have chosen to stand by Rhea; be it with slogans of ‘smash the patriarchy‘ to hitting out at the media trial that culminated in Rhea reaching jail.

As India watched this Rheality show play out on their news channels, Kangana Ranaut flew to Mumbai on a packed-to-the-wings Indigo flight. The Mumbai airport saw more people outside it than have taken off from the airport since March. As various sainiks of various Senas assembled at the airport – some to protest against Kangana; some to protest against the protest against Kangana; and some to just watch this other reality show, the coronavirus must have sighed at the sheer nonchalance of our countrymen and women.

Be that it might, it is Friday, and we hope you take a break from these mind-numbing scenes and sit back with a book. Our pick this week is Shake The Bottle and Other Stories by Ashapurna Debi, an anthology for the keeps and for life. Now since everything seems surreal, our recipe for this weekend is in keeping with this year: crazy. It is called Chocolate Fried Chicken, and we are as aghast as you; but well, nothing beats 2020 as far as fury is concerned, so we guess you will tide over this… recipe too. Else, just have the chocolate separately, and the fried chicken with some spicy sauce. Our no-bake peanut-butter cookies will help you recover from the Chocolate Fried Chicken catastrophe.

This Friday, we also took a trip back to Tip Tip Barsa Paani and that classic yellow saree that Raveena Tandon set the hearts of an entire generation racing with. On OTT and television there’s a wide range of movies, web series and shows to choose from. More on that when you reach that section.

Have a fun weekend, away from the noise and social-media madness.

Here’s your Weekend Planner.

WHAT’S TRENDING?

Roses are red. Violets are blue. Everything just got more chaotic this week, for me and you. Enough is enough, but who’s telling them? Pandemonium continues. In India and quite obviously on Twitter. Rhea Chakraborty was arrested Tuesday by the Narcotics Control Bureau on charges of drug procurement and consumption in connection with Sushant Singh Rajput’s death case. Several sections condemned her arrest and flooded Twitter with furious responses. But it is what it is.

You have to give it to Rhea though for her method of protest. The slogan on her tee that she wore during her arrest insinuated a message on patriarchy. Bohat hard. It instantly went viral and was soon echoed by several Bollywood celebrities including Vidya Balan and Dia Mirza.

Cut to Kangana Ranaut. You’ve heard enough so we’ll keep it short here. Her comments on Mumbai after she referred to the country’s financial capital as “PoK”, short for Pakistan-occupied Kashmir, sent the internet into an overdrive. Also, Shiv Sena. Amid extreme back and forth communication, a portion of Kangana’s office in Mumbai was demolished by the BMC on charges of illegal construction. Kangana found enough support on Twitter and the demolition was halted midway by an order from the Bombay High Court after she challenged the notice by the BMC.

Neither Rhea’s arrest nor Kangana’s story will affect you as much as the coronavirus has the ability to. India has recorded over 45 lakh cases and also surpassed Brazil to become the country with the second-highest number of Covid-19 cases after the United States. So, just stay indoors and don’t forget the mask in case you step out. Delhi Police is surprised that people still do.

Coronavirus numbers, for sure, are horrific. But what’s worse is Ananya Panday and Ishaan Khatter’s new song from their upcoming film Khaali Peeli. “Tujhe dekh ke goriya, Beyonce sharma jayegi,” are the lyrics of the track. Like seriously?

Don’t kill us for this but we found a recipe of Chocolate Fried Chicken on the internet this week. Everybody is disgusted with it and so are we. But speaking of khaana and all, you might find this no-nonsense coffee guide interesting, thanks to Harsh Goenka.

Before heading to the next section for happy stories, we suggest you stop by for a moment and take a look at the inspiring quotes that Smriti Irani shared on Thursday. We are sure you will love them.

SOMETHING TO MAKE YOU SMILE

For your dose of all-things-happy, we have some oh-so-adorable animal videos that will brighten up your face with a smile. To begin with, here’s a clip of panda cubs enjoying a bath. The endearing clip went viral and spread oodles of joy among netizens this week.

Meanwhile, a video of a doggo giving a side-eye to its hooman for throwing a treat far away from its mouth also did the rounds of social media this week. Lazy netizens could actually relate to the dog!

An adorable video of a baby giraffe running around with its elder brother also spread cheer. And we couldn’t help but adore their infectious energy!

Finally, here is a hilarious, long and emotional text message a girl to her mother sent at 4 am. The girl feared her sister would wake up early and eat the pizza slices and fries she had kept for herself in the fridge. Hence, the message.

DON’T STOP WORKING OUT

During these uncertain times, we have all been searching for some peace to relax our minds and stay fit. It seems that fitness enthusiast Rakul Preet Singh has found the perfect way to do that – yoga and meditation. The actress shared pictures of herself doing meditation and yoga with her Instagram family and urged people to stay fit.

Apart from Rakul, another celebrity who loves staying fit is supermodel and actor Milind Soman. Staying fit both physically and mentally is one of the biggest mottos of the actor and he constantly urges his fans to do the same. He had shared a post in which he did a headstand without any support and also did a meditation asana amid lush greenery.

The past week was also celebrated all over as the nutrition week. Former Miss World Manushi Chhillar posted images of her stretching and doing various yoga poses at the beach to celebrate the week.

In case, you are someone who enjoys intense training sessions, let Urvashi Rautela inspire you do to commando pull ups.

KHAANE MEIN KYA HAI?

We all enjoy watching videos of kids cooking in the kitchen. They are extremely adorable, messy and insanely hilarious. One such video of a kid baking cookies with his grandma while eating raw ingredients went viral. Though, we wouldn’t recommend you to eat the ingredients, but we would suggest you to bake some no-bake peanut butter and chocolate cookies for yourself.

To make these, you will need two cups of sugar, 1/2 cup of milk, 1/4 cup of unsweetened cocoa powder and 1 stick of unsalted butter. Bring these ingredients to boil in a saucepan over medium heat. Stir and then boil for 1 minute. Remove the mixture from heat and add 3 cups of rolled oats, 1 cup of peanut butter, 1 tablespoon of vanilla extract and a pinch of salt too. Then, stir the mixture. After combining everything, place a spoonful of the mixture on a baking sheet, and let it sit at room temperature. And voila, you are done.

Shake The Bottle and Other Stories

Since rebelling against patriarchy has been the flavor of the week, we’d suggest you to read Ashapurna Debi’s short stories. An acclaimed Bengali novelist, Ashapurna Debi narrated personal accounts of her characters – mostly women- from middle-class households. The domestic life of an Indian woman forms the crux of most of Ashapurna Debi’s stories. With utmost grit, her women characters responded to power play and hypocrisy that are often distinctive characteristics of conservative urban families. Shake The Bottle and Other Stories by Ashapurna Debi is our pick for this week.

FASHION KA JALWA

Tip Tip Barsa paani

Take a cue from Raveena Tandon’s iconic Tip Tip Barsa Paani look.

Every nineties kid, at some point of time or the other, has tried to imitate Raveena Tandon’s Tip Tip Barsa Paani dance steps. Akshay Kumar and Raveena Tandon’s song from 1994’s Mohra was a superhit not just because of its lyrics and music but also because Raveena looked absolutely sensuous in that yellow saree. That look, in fact, is still a rage and several celebrities including Kareena Kapoor, Alia Bhatt as well as Disha Patani made an attempt to recreate it in the past. Next in line is Katrina Kaif, who will appear in a revamped version of the hit track with Akshay in their upcoming film Sooryavanshi. In this week’s Fashion Friday, we take a look at Raveena Tandon’s iconic Tip Tip Barsa Paani look. Here you go.

FROM THE WORLD OF MOVIES

To arrest or not to arrest Rhea Chakraborty, was a question that was finally answered this week. The Narcotics Control Bureau (NCB) arrested her, sent her to Byculla jail, the court even rejected her bail plea, and now, Rhea is to remain in jail till September 22 (at least). In all this, Rhea’s smash-the-patriarchy T-shirt stole the limelight – and even became a social media campaign, with the likes of Kareena Kapoor Khan, Sonam Kapoor, Vidya Balan and Farhan Akhtar, among others, standing up for Rhea in solidarity.

Speaking of smashing, Kangana Ranaut’s Manikarnika Productions office in Pali Hill, Bandra, Mumbai was, well, smashed by the BMC. Yup, that’s what the Kangana Ranaut vs Shiv Sena’s Sanjay Raut battle led to. After the Twitter war of words between Ranaut and Raut, the BMC came in like a wrecking ball and Hulk-smashed the place. Illegal construction, was the reason given. Right.

Parallel to these two plots, there’s another Ankita Lokhande vs Shibani Dandekar subplot running. Ankita wrote an open letter where she spoke about Rhea. Shibani defended her friend Rhea and responded with her own open letter. Ankita wrote another open letter responding to Shibani’s response. At the time of writing this, Shibani was still writing her response to Ankita’s response to the response. Whoever said letter-writing was dead should respond now.

Down South, it was the Sandalwood drug bust that made the headlines. Last week, Ragini Dwivedi was arrested in relation to the case. This week, an actress named Sanjjanaa Galrani‘s was arrested as one of the accused in the case. Sanjjanaa vehemently denied her involvement in the drug case in her statement. On September 11, she was taken for a dope test and refused to co-operate with the officials. Apart from Sanjjanaa and Ragini, five others have been arrested which includes Loom Pepper, a Nigerian-origin peddler.

With all the drama happening outside of the movies, it is all the more important to take you back to the actual stuff cinema is made of. Hence, on Monday Masala, we revisited Sushant Singh Rajput’s Shuddh Desi Romance. Tuesday Trivia told us how the cold war between Jayalalithaa and Channa Reddy inspired Shankar’s Kadhalan. Throwback Thursday was all about Anurag Kashyap’s Manmarziyaan.
