Dear Reader,
Another long and dreary week comes to a close with Social Media outraging over several things in a row. The rows are many; common sense, uncommon as India goes to town slamming issue after issue, person after brand and everything under the sun. Today, it was Akshay Kumar’s turn for Laxmmi Bomb. As outraged Twitter trended #ShameOnUAkshayKumar, some of us wondered why did they leave out only the ‘y’ and the ‘o’. Brevity is not quite wit here but that’s for another day. Today is a Friday and we’re done with outrage for the weekend.
So apart from boycotting Tanishq, what is India doing this weekend? If you love cooking, there’s some easy-breezy Veg Hakka Noodles for you. If you love eating but not cooking, order in maybe. But don’t skip the sanitising and precautions and the jingbang that comes with everything these days. It’s World Food Day, after all.
From the kitchen to the bookshelf. We have Anuja Chauhan’s Baaz for you this weekend – a light read – for some top-notch humour and entertainment. There’s a lot more entertainment on your screens, TV and OTT, and more in the respective sections. And well, the movies have opened up. Unlock 5.0 unshuttered cinema halls and a lot of multiplexes are screening older films, from Kedarnath to Tanhaji: The Unsung Warrior. If you’re mustering up the courage to step into a hall, you know what to do. If you don’t, the theatres will tell you: mask, mask, mask!
Before we leave you to the Weekend Planner, a titbit from this week: Google thinks Afghan cricketer Rashid Khan’s wife is Anushka Sharma. There’s a story behind it.
Now, have a good weekend.
Here’s Your Weekend Planner.
WHAT’S TRENDING
Spread love. Not hate. Unfortunately, certain sections are not in favour of this statement. Case in point: the Tanishq ad. The jewellery brand, with its new Ekatvam advert featuring an interfaith marriage, intended to celebrate unity. But several quarters, mostly Right Wing, were not ready to buy it. What followed was massive outrage as #BoycottTanishq trended furiously on the internet. Tanishq bowed down to trolls and removed the ad, much to the dismay of many people. But it is what it is.
Shashi Tharoor lashed out at “Hindutva bigots”. As did most others on social media. The Tanishq advert is still the subject of discussion on the internet. That’s something, right?
So Hindutva bigots have called for a boycott of @TanishqJewelry for highlighting Hindu-Muslim unity through this beautiful ad. If Hindu-Muslim “ekatvam” irks them so much, why don’t they boycott the longest surviving symbol of Hindu-Muslim unity in the world — India? pic.twitter.com/cV0LpWzjda
— Shashi Tharoor (@ShashiTharoor) October 13, 2020
Apart from Tanishq, Afghan cricketer Rashid Khan also occupied the top spot on the trends list on Monday. It’s rather strange but if you search for ‘Rashid Khan wife’ on Google, Anushka Sharma’s name crops up. Why? Read here.
Meanwhile, Mumbai found itself battling a massive power cut due to grid failure on Monday. Some lamented on social media. Several others created memes and posted jokes. In case you missed out on the fun, here’s the link.
In between this, the internet, though, wasn’t quite impressed with an Uttar Pradesh IAS officer as she resumed work three weeks after her delivery and carried her newborn baby to office. “That’s not inspiring,” several users asserted.
Must be inspired by @GummallaSrijana ! @IASassociation Soumya Pandey (SDM Modinagar) didnt availed 06 months maternity leave, joined back office with her infant daughter. #CoronaWarriors pic.twitter.com/8Q6Cju2X49

Two incidents made headlines abroad. In the US, a former employee of a pizza company landed in jail after he was caught stuffing razor blades into pizza dough that was sold to customers at a supermarket. That’s really scary but what’s worse is the story of a man in Australia, who was attacked by a magpie as he sat down to enjoy his lunch at an outdoor mall. He underwent a two-hour surgery after the incident.
Meanwhile, Apple managed to drive midweek blues away as the iPhone 12 series was launched. Memes followed. By the way, have you heard of the story of the driverless car in Tamil Nadu? Here’s the deal.
Now, now. We know you are excited about the fact that cinema halls are reopening in several states but try not to fall for this because coronavirus is still very real. India has recorded over 73 lakh cases with the death toll surging past 1.11 lakh.
Don’t frown. Just head to the next section because we promise to make you smile.
SOMETHING TO MAKE YOU SMILE
An old video of a British singer singing Dama Dam Mast Qalandar on the streets of Dubai went viral on Monday and the internet enjoyed it thoroughly.

In a bid to promote a sustainable environment, Norwegian diplomat Erik Solheim posted a picture of an ice cream cup made out of a banana leaf and the internet is in support of the idea. We loved this.
DON’T STOP WORKING OUT
We are here to tell you what your favourite celebrities did last week in order to stay fit. Rakul Preet Singh did the Kapotasana during her yoga session and her Instagram post includes a valuable message.
For Neena Gupta, age is just a number. She loves doing yoga and shared a video of herself on Instagram as she did the Supta Vajrasana. Here’s why you must practice this yoga posture regularly.
Mandira Bedi also taught her fans the correct way to do Surya Namaskar and Malaika Arora explained how to do Naukasana.
Tiger Shroff, meanwhile, flaunted his martial art skills as he shared a video of himself doing a flying kick and Ankita Konwar went for a run during her holiday in the USA.
Apart from working out and maintaining a healthy lifestyle, proper sleep is extremely important. IndiaToday.in spoke to doctors to decipher the correlation between a good night’s sleep, immunity and ultimately Covid-19. Read more here.
ON YOUR PLATTER
Have you seen the viral video of a woman dancing to Gangnam Style while cooking noodles at an Asian street market? It was incredible as she swung the hot wok around her head. That short clip was interesting for sure but didn’t you feel like indulging in a plate of noodles after watching it? In that case, we are here to help.

HOW TO MAKE VEG HAKKA NOODLES?
Veg Hakka Noodles. (Photo credit: Chrysovalantou/Instagram)
Boil the noodles. Meanwhile, chop ginger, garlic, bell peppers, onion, spring onions and carrots. Drain the noodles and wash under running water. Add a few drops of oil to them so that they do not stick. In a pan, heat some oil and add ginger and garlic to it.
After a few seconds, add the onions and let them cook for a minute. Add the remaining vegetables to the pan and let them cook for two minutes. Finally, add salt, pepper, chilli sauce, vinegar, soya sauce to the vegetables and allow them to cook. Add the noodles, mix everything thoroughly and enjoy the hot plate.
WHAT TO READ?
Baaz by Anuja Chauhan.
If a mix of laugh-out-loud humour and toe-tingling romance with a dash of drama and theatrics is your cup of tea, then pick up Anuja Chauhan’s Baaz as your weekend read. The book incorporates the age-old formula of clash of the opposites as it tells the story of its protagonists – the dreamy IAF officer Ishaan Faujdaar and the independent, feisty journalist Tinka – and that creates the necessary tension for its readers. This unusual love story will raise your heartbeat not just for the romance that ensues, but also with the backdrop of the 1971 Indo-Pak war.
FASHION KA JALWA
Eight years ago, on October 16, Kareena Kapoor and Saif Ali Khan married each other in an intimate ceremony. Today, the couple is celebrating their eighth wedding anniversary, so we thought of taking a look at Bebo’s royal wedding day look, as she became begum to the Nawab of Pataudi wearing a gorgeous heirloom sharara set. Kareena had opted for a vintage piece worn by her mother-in-law, Sharmila Tagore for her nikah in 1962. We dissected the look for our Fashion Friday this week, read on to know more about this regal sharara set.
SEE YOU AT THE MOVIES
Extra butter on the popcorn and less ice in the cola, please, for theatres are now open! Though the idea of entering a closed space with central air-conditioning, no matter the social-distancing and the precaution, is daunting. Still, the fact that cinemas have reopened from October 15, brings a smile to our face. So which films are quitting their brief romance with OTT and reconciling with their one true love? That remains to be seen. From what we know so far, Akshay Kumar’s Sooryavanshi will not release this Diwali. In fact, it has been pushed to 2021, because the makers want to assess the market before they drop something like a Khiladi Kumar entertainer. Ranveer Singh’s 83 still holds the Christmas 2020 slot. For now.
Toh theatre khul gaya aur picture nahin lagi? Aise kaise? Fret not. Reliance, Yash Raj Films, and few other production houses will rerelease their older films on the big screen to primarily understand public ko kya mangta hai. Films like Ajay Devgn’s Tanhaji: The Unsung Warrior, Sushant Singh Rajput-starrer Kedarnath, Ayushmann Khurrana’s comedy film Shubh Mangal Zyada Saavdhan, Malang and Thappad are in the list. In fact, Vivek Oberoi-starrer PM Narendra Modi’s biopic will be the first film to hit the theatres once cinema halls reopen. Then there were also reports that said films tat released on OTT will re-release on the big screen. Trade analyst Taran Adarsh, however, confirmed that multiplex owners won’t allow it. Bitter break-ups, we tell you.
While multiplexes and movies continue their bittersweet banter, here’s looking at our weekly specials. For Monday Masala, we revisited Tumbbad, perhaps the only horror film Bollywood got right. Tuesday Trivia told us how Salman Khan wasn’t the first choice for Prem in Maine Pyar Kiya – and you’d be shocked to know who were. And for Throwback Thursday, we took a look at the time when Radha Ravi was called out for misogynistic remarks against Nayanthara.
Now, there may be some time before fresh movies start dropping on the big screen. The OTT screen, however, has no dearth of fresh content. Over to OTT.
