A 45-year-old woman was trampled to death by a wild elephant at Kompanpara, near Peruvanthanam, in Idukki, on Monday.
The deceased was identified as Sofia Ismail, a resident of Kompanpara under Peruvanthanam panchayat.
According to officials, the incident occurred on TR and T Estate around 6 p.m. Sofia had gone to bathe in a nearby stream on the forest border. When she did not return home after a long time, her son went searching and found the woman trampled to death by a wild elephant near the stream.
He alerted the local people who informed the police and Forest department officials.
A senior Forest department official said that the woman may have accidentally got trapped in front of the elephant, and it attacked her. ‘
Local people protested demanding a solution to the increasing wild elephant attack incidents in the area.
This is second such incident in Idukki this year. On February 6, a tribal man, Vimalan, 57,, was killed in a wild elephant attack at Chinnar, near Marayur, in the district. He was attacked by a wild elephant inside the Chinnar Wildlife Sanctuary while building a fire line.
