‘We are cutting down on other expenses to eat food,’ say consumers as vegetables prices soar

A recent CRISIL report revealed that the cost of a veg thali went up by 9% in a year because of soaring vegetable prices. In one year, tomatoes have become expensive by 39%, potatoes by 41% and onions by 43%.

On the other hand, the average price of non-veg thali has come down by 7% in a year. Whereas, the reason for non-veg thali becoming cheaper is the fall in the prices of broilers.

To understand how people are coping, we conducted interviews and found that everyone, regardless of income, is affected. People are using fewer vegetables and trying alternative foods.

Even those financially comfortable are traveling to local markets for cheaper vegetables.
