UP: Man killed in firing after dispute over allotment of ration shops in Ballia

A man was killed in firing after a dispute over allotment of ration shops in Uttar Pradesh’s Ballia.

A 46-year-old man was killed in firing on Thursday over a dispute at a meeting for selection of ration shops in Durjanpur village in Reoti area in Ballia, police said.

The victim has been identified as Jaiprakash alias Gama. According to news agency PTI, he was killed when one Dhirendra Prajapati opened fire after a meeting called at Panchayat Bhawan for selection of ration shops was cancelled by the sub-divisional magistrate.

Superintendent of Police Devendra Nath was quoted by PTI as saying that the meeting was cancelled due to a dispute between members of self-help groups who had gathered there.

An FIR has been registered in this regard against 15-20 people on the complaint of the victim’s brother Chandrama.

A sizeable police force has been deployed in the village to maintain law and order, the SP said as quoted by PTI.

Meanwhile, Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath has taken cognizance of the incident. The CM has directed to suspend the SDM, circle officer and police personnel who were on the spot. “The CM has ordered the strictest action against the accused while the role of officers will be investigated and if responsible, criminal action shall be taken,” said a source.
