A court in Uttar Pradesh’s Muzaffarnagar district has ordered a 58-year-old woman to pay monthly alimony to her estranged husband who owns a tea stall.
Noting that 62-year-old Kishori Lal Sohankar does not have a permanent source of income, a UP court ordered Munni Devi, who recently retired from the Army, to pay monthly alimony of Rs 2,000 to her ex-husband.
Kishori Lal Sohankar runs a tea stall in Khatauli town of Muzaffarnagar and her former wife, who worked in the Indian Army, gets Rs 12,000 as a pension.
According to a Times of India report, Kishori Lal Sohankar had initially filed a case in the family court, seeking directions to bring home his wife.
“But she refused to stay with him. It was then that he approached the court seeking monthly maintenance from her,” Sohankar’s lawyer BK Tayal was quoted as saying in the report.
However, since the cases of women paying alimony to their estranged husbands are rare in the country, it took them a while to convince the court to direct Munni Devi to pay monthly alimony to Sohankar.
