Stating that community transmission of Covid-19 has been recorded in a few areas in West Bengal, the Mamata Banerjee government on Monday announced a complete lockdown across the state for two days every week to stem the spread of the disease.

In a bid to tackle the rising spread of coronavirus, the West Bengal government has announced that the state will observe a complete lockdown on two days of the week.
Holding a press conference, state Home Secretary Alapan Bandyopadhyay said that West Bengal will go under lockdown on Thursday and Saturday this week.
The decision was taken following a high-level meeting, chaired by Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee, at the state secretariat, Home Secretary Alapan Bandyopadhyay said.
State home secretary Alapan Bandyopadhyay said that the decision has been taken in view of community transmission in a few areas in West Bengal.
“There are a few places in the state where community transmission of Covid-19 has been detected. After talking to experts, doctors, enforcement authorities, and the police, we have decided to impose complete lockdown for two days every week in the entire state to break the chain (of transmission),” he said.
He said the decision will be reviewed next Monday ie July 27 and the next lockdown will likely be imposed on July 29.
Meanwhile, the West Bengal government has announced that it is planning to set up COVID-19 units at every private and state-run hospital, amid the relentless surge in the number of coronavirus cases.
The government is also planning to procure at least 19 more Reverse Transcription Polymerase Chain Reaction (RT-PCR) test kits as it wants to ensure that at least 25,000 tests are carried out every day.
