A third-year student of IIT Patna and a resident of Telangana allegedly ended his life on the campus by jumping from the seventh floor of the building on Tuesday (February 25, 2025).
According to the police, the student is identified as Rahul Lavari. He was dead falling from the seventh floor.
His friends and fellow students took him to Netaji Subhash Medical College and Hospital, where he died during treatment.
Lavari was a resident of Hyderabad and he was doing B.Tech (Mathematics and Computer). Police have not found any note yet and the reason for the student taking the extreme step was yet to be ascertained by the police.
Following the incident, a large number of students gathered on the campus and demanded proper investigation.
Rituparna, who studied in the same branch said Lavari was a bright student and it was hard to believe that he tried to end his life.
“He was a very good student and there was no problem of any kind. We used to study together. I don’t know what happened. Academic pressure may be the reason because recently there have been many changes in the syllabus and semester,” Ms. Rituparna said.
Several students alleged that there were no medical facilities in the hospital built on the college campus due to which he was rushed to a private hospital. The students said had there been good medical facilities, he would have survived.
Police have lodged a case of unnatural death. Danapur Deputy Superintendent of Police (DSP) Pankaj Mishra said the student’s body has been sent for post-mortem. Sources said police would record the statement of the hostel warden and fellow students to know the reason which prompted the student to take the extreme step.
His parents have also been informed about the incident and they will reach Patna to claim his body on Wednesday (February 26, 2025). Meanwhile, the police have sealed the hostel room in which the student was staying.
