GUWAHATI
A soldier posted at a forward hospital on the Arunachal Pradesh-Assam border saved an eight-month-old infant aboard the Rajdhani Express on October 13.
The infant had developed sudden respiratory distress and became unresponsive. As the family panicked, the baby’s mother fainted, thinking her child had died.
Sepoy Sunil, who was returning to his base from leave and was in the same coach, assessed the situation, lifted the baby, examined her, and found that she had no pulse and was not breathing.
He laid the infant on a flat surface and initiated paediatric cardio-pulmonary resuscitation (CPR) using two fingers on the chest and tried mouth-to-mouth resuscitation. After two cycles of CPR, the baby showed signs of life.
Sepoy Sunil subsequently coordinated with the train staff and the railway police for the infant’s evacuation and medical management at the Rangiya station en route to Dibrugarh.
“His timely and professional action prevented a fatality in a situation where no immediate medical support was available. He displayed exceptional medical proficiency, quick judgment, and a high sense of duty to save a life,” the Ministry of Defence said in a statement on Saturday (October 18, 2025).
