Sharjeel Imam, who is currently lodged in the Guwahati Central Jail in Assam, has tested positive for novel coronavirus.

On July 17, a team of Delhi Police Special Cell had reached Assam to take Sharjeel Imam’s custody and bring him back to the national capital.

But before his transfer, Sharjeel Imam and the Delhi Police team were screened for Covid-19. While the police team tested negative, the student activist’s sample came back positive.

Delhi Police has now decided to delay Sharjeel Imam’s transfer till he is cured of the disease and his report is negative.

Sharjeel is a PhD student at the Jawaharlal Nehru University’s (JNU) Centre for Historical Studies and has been accused of making inflammatory speeches which led to violence outside Jamia Milia Islamia University in December last year. He has been booked under the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act (UAPA).

An FIR was registered against him by Delhi Police on January 25 under IPC sections 124 A (sedition) and 153 A (promoting or attempting to promote disharmony or feelings of enmity on grounds of religion, race, place of birth, residence, language, caste or community or any other ground whatsoever) among others.

This investigation is related to the funding of riots and larger conspiracy. He will be brought on a production warrant to Delhi and then will be arrested by the cell.
