Rainfall across country disrupts life, floods in UP-Bihar worsen, states in south, east brace for more rain

Most parts of the country, including states in the north such as Uttar Pradesh, West Bengal and Assam in the east, Maharashtra in the west and south Indian states of Telangana and Andhra Pradesh have been receiving heavy rainfall over the past few days. In some of the states the situation has further worsened to turn into flood-like conditions.

Heavy rains and waterlogging have disrupted normal life even in the capital city of Delhi-NCR over the past couple of days from where videos have emerged showing cars, buses and vehicles trapped on overflowing roads. Meanwhile, the worsening flood situation in Uttar Pradesh has now affected people in over 870 villages in 16 districts.

Rainfall updates from across India:

DELHI-NCR

Delhi has received incessant rainfall over the past couple of days, which has managed to throw normal life out of gear in the national capital and adjoining areas. The heavy rains have led to long traffic snarls, trees lying on roads and also caused damage to property in many areas.

Noida in Gautam Buddh Nagar of Uttar Pradesh recorded its heaviest spell of rainfall this season (133 mm) over a 24-hour period from Wednesday till Thursday morning, while it was 51 mm for Greater Noida.

Gurgaon in Haryana received 140 mm of rainfall during the period, while the adjoining Faridabad got 91 mm rain, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) data stated.

BIHAR & UTTAR PRADESH

In Bihar, the flood continues to remain as grim. With two more deaths, the toll in Bihar floods has climbed to 27 with nearly 82 lakh people being affected across 16 districts of the state. Floods have affected 81,79,257 people in 1,317 panchayats of 130 blocks till Thursday.

In Uttar Pradesh, over 870 villages are submerged in water after incessant heavy rainfall over the past days that have raised water levels in the rivers. In a video shared by news agency ANI, villages in Pura Bazar of Ayodhya were seen flooded after the water level in Sarayu River rose to alarming levels.

Relief Commissioner Sanjay Goyal said that 578 of the affected villages are marooned and relief work was going on in the affected areas.

MAHARASHTRA

As Maharashtra prepared for the Ganesh Chaturthi festivities that are to begin on Saturday, Mumbai most parts of the state have been warned of heavy to very heavy rainfall starting Friday. While it has already started raining heavily in parts of Mumbai, IMD has issued an orange alert for Raigad while Palghar is also expected to receive heavy rains.

JAMMU & KASHMIR, HARYANA

Further north, in Haryana, heavy rainfall has triggered waterlogging in parts of the Palwal region. Most places in neighbouring Punjab witnessed light rains.

In Jammu and Kashmir, several landslides were reported that were triggered by heavy rains. Landslides blocked the 270-km Jammu-Srinagar national highway, the only all-weather road linking Kashmir to rest of the country. Over 200 vehicles were stranded at different points of the highway on Thursday.

According to an ANI video, farmers from Ghordi Block in Udhampur said their crops have been damaged in the rainfall.

WEST BENGAL, ODISHA

The IMD has said that heavy to very heavy rainfall has been recorded at isolated places in east Rajasthan and heavy rainfall at isolated places in Konkan and Goa, Telangana, Odisha, West Bengal, Sikkim and north-eastern states of Assam and Meghalaya.

Towards the east, West Bengal has been receiving incessant rainfall with bouts of heavy rainfall over the past few days. 5,000 cusecs of water was released from Kangsabati Reservoir in Mukutmanipur in Bankura following heavy rainfall in the area.

The heavy rains in Odisha threw life out of gear by snapping road link and communication, and damaging mud houses. Two men were washed away in an overflowing Jambhira river at Golmuhan Ghat in Mayurbhanj district.

IMD has predicted more rains for Odisha, Chhattisgarh, Madhya Pradesh, Telangana and Gujarat over the next few days.

TELANGANA, KERALA, ANDHRA

In Telangana, the district administration in Bhadradri Kothagudem district has ordered to stop movement of vehicles on the approach road of Nagaram-Rangapuram Bridge as water levels rose in Kinnerasani, a tributary of the Godavari River.

In Kerala, the death toll in the Pettimudilandslide climbed to 63 on Thursday with the recovery of an unidentified woman’s body while search is on for seven missing people.

Fresh spell of heavy rainfall in Andhra Pradesh has resulted in the swelling of Krishna and Godavari river tributaries. Several streams are flowing at danger level since Friday morning, which has paralysed normal life in the state as roads in Nandigama, Mylavaram, Kanchikacherla, Penuganchiporlu, Chandarlapadu Nuzvid, Challapalli and Gudivada have been inundated in knee-deep water.

With heavy rains lashing the state, water levels in Krishna River near Prakasam Barrage have been increasing steadily.
