The K.K. Nagar police have registered a case against 10 “unknown” cadre of the Bharatiya Janata Party in connection with the alleged assault on a photographer of a Tamil daily while the latter was covering a public meeting organised by the party on the National Education Policy at Mannarpuram in Tiruchi on Sunday night.
The case was booked on a complaint lodged by photographer S. Sundar, who was admitted to the Mahatma Gandhi Memorial Government Hospital here for treatment after he suffered an injury on his forehead and suffered pain on his left shoulder.
Police sources said the photographer was trying to send photographs to his office through mobile phone when some cadre quarrelled with him. They allegedly abused and assaulted him assuming that he had taken photographs of empty chairs at the meeting in which the BJP State unit president K. Annamalai spoke. A case under different sections of the BNS, including 115(2) (voluntarily causing hurt), has been registered.
Meanwhile, Tiruchi Lok Sabha member Durai Vaiko has sought appropriate action by the police against those BJP cadre who were involved in the assault. In a statement on Monday, Mr. Durai Vaiko said he felt distressed over the assault and condemned the incident.
