As former Prime Minister Manmohan Singh turned 88 on Saturday, Prime Minister Narendra Modi wished him in a tweet and prayed for his long life.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi greeted his predecessor Manmohan Singh on his birthday on Saturday along with several other top politicians across party lines.

Manmohan Singh, who headed the UPA coalition government between 2004 and 2014, turned 88 on Saturday. Manmohan Singh is credited with playing a key role in ushering in economic reforms as the finance minister in the PV Narasimha Rao government during 1991-96.

Wishing Manmohan Singh, the prime minister tweeted, “Birthday greetings to Dr Manmohan Singh Ji. I pray to Almighty that he is blessed with a long and healthy life.”

Earlier, Congress leader Rahul Gandhi also wished Manmohan Singh on his birthday and said the country misses the depth of Manmohan Singh as the Prime Minister.

“India feels the absence of a PM with the depth of Dr Manmohan Singh. His honesty, decency and dedication are a source of inspiration for us all. Wishing him a very happy birthday and a lovely year ahead,” said Rahul Gandhi, taking a dig at PM Narendra Modi.

Before being appointed as the Prime Minister of the UPA governments, Manmohan Singh was the finance minister who ushered the liberalisation of Indian economy.

The noted economist has also held the posts of Planning Commission chief and RBI Governor in his long career.
