New police check-post opened in Vellore on T.N-A.P border to prevent smuggling of sand, PDS rice

New police check-post at Ananthagiri village near Pernambut town in Vellore on Tamil Nadu – Andhra Pradesh border was opened, mainly to prevent smuggling of river sand and PDS rice.

Residents said that remote border villages like Pathapalayam, Muthukoor,Rangampettai, Gundalapalli and Ananthagiri are located on the fringes of reserve forests on the T.N-A.P border.

Farmers depend on small lakes in these villages for irrigation. However, illegal mining of silt and river sand has resulted in decline of groundwater level in the area. It has largely affected farming and allied activities like cattle rearing in these villages. “Illegal mining of silt from lakes and sand from Palar river in the region is rampant. Frequent movement of vehicles that carry sand and silt also damaged roads. We have been demanding a new police check-post for more than a decade to prevent such crime,” said G. Marimuthu, a resident.

The Superintendent of Police (Vellore) N. Mathivanan inaugurated the check post that comes under Pernambut police limits. “As it is located on the sensitive inter-State border, the new check-post will help to increase surveillance in the region. Remaining check-posts will be given a facelift in phases,” Mr. Mathivanan told The Hindu
