NCP chief Sharad Pawar will be observing fast for a day to express solidarity with the group of 8 Rajya Sabha MPs who were suspended for unruly behaviour in the House.

Addressing the media on Tuesday, Sharad Pawar said, “The farm bills were to be discussed in the Rajya Sabha. Members had questions regarding the bill, but prima facie it seems like they did not want a discussion. They wanted to know which rule was being applied by the Vice-Chairman.”

“When members did not get a response they came into the Well, I have never seen bills being passed like this. There was a voice vote to pass the bill and the reaction to that was there,” said Sharad Pawar, objecting to the manner in which the two farm bills were passed in Rajya Sabha on Sunday amid Opposition protests.

Sharad Pawar also said, “Members were expelled for expressing their opinion. There is an attempt to snatch the rights of members. The Vice-Chairman has not given priority to the rules. He came to serve them tea during their protest.”

Then he went on to add, “I will not eat anything today in solidarity with the protesting members.”

On Tuesday morning, Rajya Sabha Deputy Chairperson Harivansh Singh met the 8 suspended MPs on the lawns of Parliament with tea and snacks, which they refused and said it was all a show for the media.

Later, PM Narendra Modi heaped praises on Harivansh for his “humility and big heart” in bringing tea and snacks for the same MPs who misbehaved with him. Soon after, Harivansh announced that he will be observing fast for a day to arouse the consciousness of people regarding the unruly behaviour of the protesting Opposition MPs.
