Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis flagged off the trial run of Metro Line 4 A on Monday (September 22, 2025) and said, “The construction of Metro line 4 will be finished by the end of 2026 and fully operational by 2027, with 21 lakh people travelling daily on the line.”
“The daily influx on Metro 4 A line will be over 13 lakhs. Our steps are to open all the metro lines by the end of next year. With the availability of land in the Mogharpada depot, the work of metro 4, 10, and 11 has started,” said Mr. Fadnavis, adding that from Thane to Mumbai, a 58 km metro line will be made available.
Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA), the government agency responsible for infrastructure development of the Mumbai Metropolitan Region (MMR), conducted trial runs on Thane’s Cadbury Junction-Gaimukh section of Metro Line 4, which is the first phase of the Wadala to Kasarvadavali Metro 4 corridor.
According to MMRDA officials, the 10.5km Cadbury Junction-Gaimukh stretch (Metro 4 A) will be operational for commuters by December-end, after clearances. The stretch is a part of the 32.3km Wadala-Thane-Kasarvadavali Metro-4 corridor.
Deputy Chief Minister Eknath Shinde also called the trial run “historic” and “an achievement” for Thanekars, as after the railway, this is the first time Thane is going to get a metro. “The railway in Thane was inaugurated in 1853; today, after 172 years, Thane is going to get a new mode of transport.”
He also took potshots at previous governments, alleging that Thane was ignored while the metro projects for MMR were being approved during Congressman Prithviraj Chavan’s tenure as Chief Minister. “We protested to bring the metro to Thane at that time. Between 2014 and 2021, during Mr. Fadnavis’ government, numerous metro projects were approved. In 2022, during Maha Vikas Aghadi (MVA)‘s tenure, the project was halted. During my tenure, we started again and brought it till here,” said Mr. Shinde.
The Metro Line 4A will have 6 coaches with stops at Majiwada, Kapurbawdi, Manpada, Tikuji-ni-Wadi, Dongri Pada, Vijay Garden, Kasarvadavali, and Gowniwada; in total, Metro 4 will have 32 stations.
Mr. Shinde also said that the loop will be created around Mumbai, connecting Thane to CST. “The government has also approved the internal metros that will connect Kalayan-Dombivali-Bhiwandi, Swami Samarth Nagar to Kanjurmarg, Kapurwadi to Kalyan, Gaimukh to Mira-Bhayandar, and Wadala- CST, providing last-mile connectivity,” said Mr. Shinde.
