Meeting to discuss improved tsunami warning systems

The Indian National Centre for Ocean Information Services (INCOIS), Ministry of Earth Sciences (MoES), Hyderabad, in collaboration with University College London (UCL) will host the first annual meeting of the United Kingdom Research and Innovation (UKRI)-MoES funded project titled ‘People-Centred Tsunami Early Warning for the Indian Coastlines (PCTWIN)‘ here from April 8 to 11.

Launched in February 2024, the PCTWIN project is supported jointly by the Natural Environment Research Council, United Kingdom Research and Innovation, UK, and the Ministry of Earth Sciences, according to a release.

It aims to improve the effectiveness of tsunami early warning systems by integrating scientific expertise with community-based strategies, thereby enhancing disaster preparedness and resilience across India’s vulnerable coastlines.

The second annual meeting will serve as a platform for collaborative review, future planning, and community engagement following the project’s inaugural meeting held at INCOIS in May 2024. Around 30 participants from abroad will attend. Twenty community members from Edavanakkad panchayat here will participate in a stakeholders’ workshop held as part of the meeting, it said.
