Manipur violence: CBI files 2 chargesheets in missing students case

The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) has filed two separate chargesheets against five accused individuals in two inter-related cases of Manipur violence. The chargesheets were filed in the court of Chief Judicial Magistrate, Kamrup (M), Guwahati, Assam.

The CBI registered a case on August 23, 2023, following a request from the Manipur government. The probe agency took over the investigation into the case registered by Imphal Police on July 8. The complaint, filed by a concerned parent, alleged the kidnapping of their minor daughter by another minor boy with the intention of forcing her into marriage against her will.

Simultaneously, the father of the accused minor boy had registered an FIR at Lamphel Police Station, Imphal West, on July 19. He claimed that his 17-year-old son had gone missing since July 6 and might have been kidnapped.

In response to the government’s request, the CBI took control of this case on August 23, 2023.

The investigation unveiled that on the morning of July 6, the boy went to the tuition class of the minor girl and picked her up on his bike. The two were intercepted while heading towards Bishnupur and Thas View Point Area on old Cachar Road. The accused forcibly took the victims, the boy and the girl, and placed them in a vehicle. Subsequently, they were transported to an undisclosed location and allegedly killed. Four individuals were apprehended during the investigation and are presently in judicial custody.

In response to the findings, the CBI has filed separate chargesheets in both cases against the five accused.
