Kolkata: Drunk men kill civic volunteer by smashing his head with brick, 3 held

A civic volunteer was brutally murdered right in the heart of Kolkata allegedly by a group of drunk men near Hastings Shrine under Vidyasagar Bridge post midnight on Saturday.

A civic volunteer was brutally murdered right in the heart of Kolkata allegedly by a group of drunk men near Hastings Shrine under Vidyasagar Bridge post midnight on Saturday.

Sources told India Today TV that a few intoxicated men attacked the civic volunteer, identified as Irshad Hossain alias Mohammad Sunny, and smashed his head with a brick.

The deceased, a civic volunteer of Maidan police station, saw a group of people drinking near the Hastings shrine at midnight after which an altercation took place between him and the accused men.

The civic volunteer was not on duty at that time. Nevertheless, he tried to stop them after which the accused attacked him with a brick.

Later, his head was knocked against the iron deck of Vidyasagar Bridge several times.

Sunny fell unconscious on the street. He was rushed to SSKM hospital by locals where doctors declared him dead.

Police are investigating the case. So far three people have been arrested in the case.
