A 36-year-old woman suffered burns on her face and neck after her husband allegedly poured hot fish curry on her for refusing to participate in a black magic ritual in Kerala’s Kollam district.
The accused, identified as Sajeer from Vaikkal near Chadayamangalam, is currently absconding, police said.
According to the FIR, the incident occurred around 10 am on Wednesday at the couple’s rented house.
Sajeer had reportedly visited a black magic practitioner in Anchal and brought home ashes and a thread. He then asked his wife to loosen her hair, sit in front of him, and allow him to apply the ashes and tie the locket around her neck. When she refused, he allegedly poured boiling fish curry on her face while it was being cooked in the kitchen.
Hearing her screams, neighbours rushed to the house and took her to a private hospital in Anchal, where she is undergoing treatment. Police said the accused believed his wife was “possessed” and had assaulted her multiple times in the past.
Officers said Rejila had previously filed a complaint against him for assault, after which he was warned. However, he later began consulting black magic practitioners again. Rejila also told a local TV channel that her husband frequently visited a Usthad in Anchal who performed black magic and instructed him to use ashes and a locket on her.
Police have registered a case under Section 118(1) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (causing hurt using dangerous weapons or means), and efforts are on to trace the accused.
