A Dalit woman, aged 22 years, hanged herself in an UP village and named a man who had repeatedly raped her and forced her to undergo abortion. She also named his family in her suicide note for harassing her to reach a “compromise”.

According to a report in The Indian Express, the woman named the rape accused, a 28-year-old man arrested earlier this month, in her suicide note. She also named his family of three brothers and parents for harassing her to reach a compromise with the rape accused.

Police of Lakhimpur Kheri in Bareilly said and FIR was registered based on the woman’s complaint and the man was arrested on July 7. But on Sunday, she hanged herself at her home and said in the suicide note that she was frustrated with the consistent harassment by the accused family.

While naming six members of the family, the woman also mentioned in her note that she was forced to abort the child when she became pregnant.

Another report in The Times of India has said the family members of the woman staged a protest against the local circle officer who they claimed was trying to get the woman to reach a “compromise” with the rape accused and his family.

After they raised a complaint against the office, authorities removed the officer from the investigation, but the family says the officer is still pressurising them to arrive at a deal with the accused family.

While the rape accused is already in jail, other members of the family have been booked for abetment to suicide and provisions of the SC/ST Act.
