The Meghalaya police on Sunday arrested one more member of an armed group of suspected Bangladeshi intruders who attacked a villager in South West Khasi Hills district on August 9.
The district police said Mubarak Hussain was caught 24 hours after four other gang members — Mefus Rehman (35), Jangir Alom (25), Meruphur Rahman (32) and Saem Hussain (30) — were arrested from a couple of border villages on Saturday.
The police took some of these men, beaten up by the villagers, to a local health centre for treatment. Of the five, Meruphur is allegedly a police constable in Bangladesh.
The district’s Superintendent of Police, B. Jyrwa, said the motive behind their intrusion would be known during interrogation after a remand from the court.
Locals said nine men, armed with pistols and sharp weapons, forced their way into a shop at Rongdangai village near the Bangladesh border early on Saturday. They held Balsrang A. Marak, who was sleeping inside the shop, hostage and took him toward the New Rongdangai village.
“The victim was able to free himself while he was being taken away and ran to a house in New Rongdangai village and locked the door from inside. However, the miscreants chased, banged the door from outside, and fired some rounds,” Mr. Jyrwa said.
The miscreants managed to get inside the house and assaulted Mr. Marak before leaving.
Hours later, the police received information from a quarry owner that some armed miscreants were trespassing on his land near Khonjoy village.
The miscreants escaped soon after a police patrol party reached the spot and fired a few rounds. The miscreants left behind an axe, a barbed wire cutter, a screwdriver, a small knife, a Bangladesh police identity card, three wireless handsets, 10 Bangladeshi currency notes totalling taka 769, a ₹500 Indian currency note, and three micro explosives.
