Over one lakh devotees offered prayers to Goddess Mahalakshmi in the Kammasigadam temple near Ranasthalam village in Srikakulam district on Sunday, the last day of the three-day annual jatara (fete). Many people living away from their families make it a point to attend this festival which is celebrated with more fervour in the region than even Sankranti.
BJP State President D. Purandeswari, Etcherla MLA N. Eswara Rao, industrialist and philanthropist Sura Srinivasa Rao and others worshipped the deity. Ms Purandeswari said that local festivals were part of Indian tradition and culture and that they enhanced social bonding.
