MP: BJP and Cong spar over star campaigner’s list

The Madhya Pradesh Congress committee on Saturday released a list of 30 star campaigners for the party for the upcoming bypolls to 28 assembly segments in the state.

The list includes former Congress President Rahul Gandhi, AICC General Secretary Priyanka Gandhi, Rajasthan CM Ashok Gehlot, Chhattisgarh CM Bhupesh Baghel, former CM Digvijaya Singh, former Punjab Minister Navjot Singh Siddhu, former Rajasthan Deputy CM Sachin Pilot among others. The party has however not clarified whether Rahul Gandhi and Priyanka Gandhi would be campaigning in the by-elections, even though their names figure in the list of star campaigners.

Of late the list of star campaigners released by either party is closely scrutinized by the other party.

On Saturday, after the release of the star campaigners list, the BJP attacked the Congress by saying that it was relying on a list of imported leaders in the form of Bhupesh Baghel and Ashok Gehlot.

“Why is the name of Chhindwara MP Nakul Nath who till a few days ago was touted as the next big youth leader of the state missing from the list of star campaigners?” said BJP state spokesperson Rahul Kothari.

“Has the Congress discussed with Rahul Gandhi before placing him in the list of star campaigners? In case Rahul Gandhi comes to MP, he will find it difficult to campaign for candidates as the public will question him on his promise to write off farm loans within 10 days of coming to power- a promise he had made in the run-up to the 2018 elections,” he added.

Last week the BJP had released the list of star campaigners. The Congress had said that the BJP had placed Jyotiraditya Scindia at number 10 which showed the respect the leader got after joining the BJP.
