In a statement that has raised many eyebrows, Maharashtra state BJP president Chandrakant Patil has said that his party is open to joining hands with the Shiv Sena. The statement came immediately after BJP national president JP Nadda appealed to state office bearers to strive towards bringing back the party to power in Maharashtra on its own.
The two allies had a bitter fallout following the Maharashtra elections after Shiv Sena dumped its old ally BJP to join hands with arch rivals NCP and Congress to form the Maha Vikas Aghadi government in Maharashtra.
Chandrakant Patil, while speaking to reporters in Kolhapur said, “Even if we come to power and have to forge an alliance with Shiv Sena, we will still contest the elections on our own. We can form the government together, but that does not mean we will contest the elections together.”
During his virtual address to party workers, JP Nadda appealed them to ensure that the party doesn’t need any “crutches” for the next assembly elections in Maharashtra.
Earlier on Monday morning, Maharashtra Deputy Chief Minister Ajit Pawar took to Twitter to wish the CM on his birthday. Pawar tweeted a picture of himself with the CM, where he is seen seated on the steering wheel of a golf cart while Uddhav is seated next to him.
Interestingly, on Sunday, Uddhav Thackeray in his interview to Saamana said that if a three-party coalition government is compared with an auto rickshaw, the steering of the vehicle is in his hands. Ajit Pawar’s cryptic tweets was in a way seen as a direct reply to the CM suggesting that he also holds the steering of the government in his hands.
BJP’s latest statement is now seen as an olive branch offered to Shiv Sena.
