Former Congress president and Lok Sabha MP from Wayanad in Kerala, Rahul Gandhi on Sunday accused the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) of lying.

Taking to Twitter, Rahul Gandhi said, “BJP has institutionalised lies. The illusion will break soon and India will pay the price.”

He accused the BJP of fabricating data on the coronavirus pandemic and said the BJP did so by “restricting testing and misreporting deaths.”

Gandhi referred to a recent media report that raised questions about India’s comparatively low Covid-19 death rates. The report suggests that a large number of deaths in India go unnoticed and the deceased is never tested for the novel coronavirus.

The Ministry of Health and Family Welfare (MoHFW) had claimed last week that India’s Covid-19 fatality rate per million population is the lowest in the world. While making the statement, the ministry cited ‘WHO Situation Report-168’ dated July 6. As per the WHO’s report, India’s Covid-19 cases per million stood at 505.37 as against the global average of 1,453.25.

Going forward with his allegation against the BJP, Rahul Gandhi said that the party has institutionalised lies by using a new calculation method for the Gross Domestic Product (GDP).

In January of this year, the International Monetary Fund (IMF) had termed India’s revised methodology to calculate GDP as “complex” in its annual staff report. Former Reserve Bank of India governor C Rangarajan also urged the Ministry of Statistics and Programme Implementation (MoSPI) just last month to issue clarity about the GDP calculation methodology.

Rahul Gandhi further claimed that the BJP is institutionalising lies over “Chinese aggression by frightening the media”.
