Around 15 villagers in Pulaguda village of Andhra Pradesh’s Srikakulam district allegedly murdered a tribal man on Saturday night after they suspected him of practicing witchcraft.

The accused went to the man’s house and dragged him out of his residence and beat him to death. After killing the man they also set his body on fire to remove evidence, the Times of India reported.

The deceased has been identified as V Nayakamma, aged 44 years, and worked as a small farmer.

The police have said that the accused suspected Nayakamma to be responsible for the death of one K Ramesh who died three weeks ago. Even after Ramesh’s wife said that her husband died of illness, the accused held Nayakamma responsible for Ramesh’s death.

Relatives of the deceased and some villagers believed rumours that Nayakamma’s witchcraft and spells led to Ramesh’s illness and death.
