Ace shooter Shreyasi Singh joins BJP in presence of party’s Bihar unit chief Bhupendra Yadav

Daughter of former union minister Digvijay Singh, Shreyasi won a gold medal in double trap events at the 2018 Commonwealth Games and a silver medal in the 2014 Commonwealth Games.

Shreyasi Singh, Ace Indian shooter joined the BJP on Sunday in the presence of the chief of the party’s Bihar unit Bhupendra Yadav among others. Reports suggest that the BJP could field her either from the Amarpur or Jamui parliamentary constituency in the upcoming 2020 Bihar elections.

Interestingly, the Jamui seat is represented by Lok Janshakti Party (LJP) chief Chirag Paswan. The LJP has decided to contest the Bihar polls out of the fold of the NDA.

The daughter of former union minister late Digvijay Singh, Shreyasi hails from Gidhaur in Bihar’s Jamui district. She competes in the double trap event and managed to bag a gold medal at the 2018 Commonwealth Games in Australia. In 2014, Shreyasi had won a silver medal at the Commonwealth Games held in Scotland.

She was also part of the Indian team that competed at the 2013 Trap Shooting World Cup in Mexico. She was also awarded the Arjuna Award for shooting in 2018.

There have been reports of Shreyasi being in talks with other parties such as the RJD but she finally decided to join the BJP in a public ceremony less than a month before the Bihar assembly elections.

A Congressman from Bihar, Shreyasi’s grandfather Kumar Surendra Singh and father Digvijay Singh had held the post of the president of the National Rifle Association in their time. Digvijay Singh was allotted multiple portfolios in the then prime minister Chandrashekhar’s cabinet. He was later given the charge of MoS (Railways) in Atal Bihari Vajpayee’s government. Shreyasi’s mother Putul Singh also served as a MP from Bihar’s Banka.
