Sunni Central Waqf Board to set up a mosque construction trust in a week’s time

NEW DELHI: As preparations intensify for the ground-breaking ceremony for the Ram temple in Ayodhya on August 5, a trust could be announced around the same time for the construction of a mosque in the Dhannipur village of the city.

The Supreme Court judgement of November 9 last year had directed that five acres of land in Ayodhya be allotted to the Sunni Central Waqf Board as a relief to the Muslim side, even as it granted the entire 67.7 acres of the Ram Janmabhoomi site to the Hindu side.

“The trust for building the mosque has been finalised. It will have around 15 members. We will officially inform about it in a week’s time,” Zufar Ahmad Faruqi, chairman of the UP Sunni Central Waqf Board told ET. He said it would also take another week for other formalities like transfer of the five acres of land in revenue records to be completed, though the land has already been allotted.

“Due to the lockdown, these formalities could not be completed. The trust will decide whether to seek donations for building the mosque.”
