Agricultural and processed food exports up 21.8% in April-August: Govt

The government on Tuesday said India’s export of agricultural and processed food products rose 21.8% on year in April-August with rice, fresh fruit and vegetables and cereals exhibiting growth.

The exports of products under the ambit of the Agricultural and Processed Food Products Export Development Authority (APEDA) were $7.9 billion in the first five months of the fiscal as against $6.4 billion a year ago, the commerce and industry ministry said in a statement.

Rice exports increased 13.7% to $3.8 billion from $3.3 billion a year ago.

Outbound shipments of fresh fruits & vegetables registered a 6.1% rise while those of processed food products like cereals preparations grew 41.9%.

“India reported a significant 142.1% jump in export of other cereals while the export of meat, dairy & poultry products witnessed an increase 31.1% in the first five months of the current fiscal,” the ministry said.

The export of other cereals increased to $379 million from $157 million in April-August 2020-21 while that of meat, dairy and poultry products rose to $1.5 billion from $1.1 billion.

The cashew export witnessed a growth of 28.5% in April-August 2021 at $185 million from $144 million in the corresponding period of last year, according to the statement.
