The Uttar Pradesh government has filed an affidavit in the Supreme Court, seeking a CBI probe into the Hathras case.
In its affidavit in the SC, the Yogi Adityanath-led UP government claimed that ‘vested interests’ have been making attempts to derail a fair probe in the Hathras case.
The UP government said in the affidavit that the SC must direct the CBI to probe the alleged rape and assault of the 19-year-old Dalit girl in Hathras.
Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath had earlier recommended a CBI probe in the Hathras case. The Uttar Pradesh government also claimed that certain groups were using the Hathras case to defame the Yogi Adityanath-led government and stoke sectarian violence in the state.
The SC will today hear a PIL seeking a CBI probe or an SIT investigation under a sitting or former Supreme Court or a High Court judge in the Hathras case.
A bench, headed by Chief Justice SA Bobde and comprising Justices AS Bopanna and V Ramasubramanian, will take up the PIL filed by social activist Satyama Dubey and advocates Vishal Thakre and Rudra Pratap Yadav.
The petitioners have urged the SC to pass appropriate orders for a fair investigation – either by the CBI or the SIT under a sitting or retired Supreme Court or High Court judge – and transfer the case to Delhi, as Uttar Pradesh authorities had failed to take certain actions against accused persons.
