Hathras is still fresh in the memory of the nation but three heinous cases of crimes against women have come to light from Gujarat over the past few weeks. The gang-rape of a woman in Mahisagar had led to questions about the safety of women in the state.

Now, the gang-rape of a 15-year-old girl in Jamnagar has shocked the state’s conscience. The incident has been reported from Jamnagar’s Mahadev Nagar area where four addicts drugged a 15-year-old girl and took turns raping her. Police are currently probing the case.

This case of gang-rape has been brought to the attention of local police in Jamnagar earlier this week. Deputy Superintendent of police (rural) AP Jadeja told India Today that the incident took place at Mahadev Nagar in Jamnagar’s Khodiyar Colony on September 28. Four accused fed the 15-year-old girl sleeping pills and gang-raped her, DSP Jadeja confirmed.

The police have arrested Darshan Bhatia, Milan Bhatia and Devkaran Gadvi in connection with the case. A search is underway for the fourth accused Mohit Bhatia who is currently absconding. Officials said all of the accused are residents of Mahadev Nagar. The complainant alleged that she was acquainted with one of the accused and went to meet him when he drugged her and invited three of his accomplices to rape her.

MLA from Gujarat’s Vadgam, Jignesh Mevani said in a tweet on Sunday, “A Hathras in Gujarat also.”

“Gujarat is ahead in crimes against women and rapes. Only erecting infrastructure cannot be called development. The country also needs socio-cultural change,” Mevani said in his tweet adding, “@narendramodi, at least speak now.”
