Situation at LAC tense; jawans highly motivated and prepared: Army chief Naravane

Army chief Gen MM Naravane said on Friday that the situation along the Line of Actual Control (LAC) is slightly tense due to the recent border dispute between India and China. Asserting that the jawans are highly motivated, Gen MM Naravane said they are ready to deal with any challenge that may arise.

Army Chief Gen MM Naravane, who is on a two-day visit to Ladakh, carried out a comprehensive review of the security situation in the region on Thursday, days after China made fresh attempts to change the status quo along the southern bank of Pangong lake, triggering a further escalation in tensions.

On the second day of his visit to Ladakh, Army chief MM Naravane said he spoke with officers and junior commissioned officers (JCOs) and took stock of the situation at the LAC. The situation along the LAC will be tackled through a dialogue, Gen MM Naravane said.

“I visited different places after reaching Leh. I talked to officers, JCOs and took stock of preparedness. The morale of jawans is high and they are ready to deal with all challenges,” Army chief MM Naravane said.

Noting that the situation at the LAC has been tense following the fresh attempts made by the Chinese troops to change the status quo near the Pangong Tso lake, Army chief MM Naravane said, “Keeping in view of the situation, we have taken precautionary deployment for our own safety and security so that our security and integrity remain safeguarded.”

“The situation at LAC is tense. The steps we have taken are historic. We have taken all the strategic steps for our security. The situation has been tense from the past three months. We will tackle the situation through dialogue. These engagements are ongoing and will continue in the future also. Whatever differences we have, we will sort it out with dialogue,” he said.

He said, “We are very sure that through this medium of talks, we will resolve whatever difference we have. We will ensure that the status quo is not changed and we are able to safeguard our interests,” Army chief Gen MM Naravane said.

On Thursday, the Army Chief also visited a key forward location where he interacted with a sizeable number of troops.

Tensions flared up in eastern Ladakh after China unsuccessfully attempted to occupy Indian territory in the southern bank of Pangong lake four days back when the two sides were engaged in diplomatic and military talks to resolve the festering border row.
