The Vizianagaram Municipal Corporation has taken special drive for the removal of petty shops which were set up on footpaths in almost all localities of the City. Tiffin centers, tea shops, panipuri counters, mobile repair centers and others have come up on well developed footpaths with the funds provided by the Union and central governments for the improvement of civic infrastructure in cities and towns.
The vehicles parked in haphazard manner near those shops are also causing traffic problems in several areas. Pedestrians who do not find space to walk on footpaths are moving on roads, disrupting the movement of vehicles. With the directive from Vizianagaram Municipal Commissioner Palli Nallanayya, the civic authorities took the initiative in removing those shops to ensure hassle free usage of footpaths near fort junction, Balaji junction, Ring Road and other places.
Mr. Nallanayya said that the Corporation has given sufficient time for the shifting of those shops to other places. Meanwhile, Vizianagaram Superintendent of Police Vakul Jindal directed the traffic police to ensure hassle free movement of vehicles from clock tower junction to old Maharaja Hospital areas as traffic jams are the order of the day.
He has also asked them to hold a meeting with representatives of shop owners to overcome traffic hurdles in the route. He observed that several shops have been using cellar space also for business needs without giving chance for the customers to park their vehicles within the premises of the showrooms. He said that the smooth traffic was essential ahead of Christmas and Sankranti festival season when more people come to markets for shopping.
