Case against Instagram over indecent content involving mothers, sons

A case has been filed against Instagram in connection with indecent content involving mothers and sons. The case has been filed under the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (Pocso) and the Information Technology (IT) Acts, following instructions from the National Commission for Protection of Child Rights (NCPCR).

A notice has also been issued to the social media platform and to Meta’s office in the United States, under CrPC 91.

The development comes after the child rights body National Commission for Protection of Child Rights (NCPCR) raised concerns over such videos circulating on social media platforms.

The videos featured indecent acts, such as kisses, between mothers and sons.

The Instagram handle which featured such content was traced to Dakshin Dinajpur, in West Bengal.

In January this year, the NCPCR asked YouTube India’s government affairs and public policy head to appear before it in person, with a list of channels promoting such content.

Later, the Maharashtra Police registered a case against YouTube India in connection with the videos.

The operator of a specific YouTube channel had also been charged under the Pocso for posting mother-son ‘challenge videos’.
