A property offender reportedly ended his life in Rayadurg police station on Tuesday, unable to bear the alleged torture during his less-than-24 hours police custody in connection with a petty case.

When contacted, Anantapur Superintendent of Police Fakkeerappa Kaginelli told  The Hindu that a habitual property offender, Ramanjaneyulu, hailing from Sanapa village in Atmakur mandal of Anantapur district, was arrested on Monday morning along with another person, Srinivasulu, on a complaint of stealing sheep. A FIR under section 379 was registered. After questioning the duo, the personnel reportedly locked them up in a computer room at the station at night, instead of putting them in the regular lock up. The police personnel later found Ramanjaneyulu hanging from the ceiling fan using his ‘lungi’.

CI, two constables suspended

The Superintendent of Police said an inquiry would be initiated in the case and that the Circle Inspector Srinivasulu, constables Madhu Babu and Ganganna and home guard Ramesh were put under suspension for their dereliction of duties until further reports came.

Anantapur Range Deputy Inspector General of Police M. Ravi Prakash, who issued the suspension orders after a preliminary inquiry by the SP, said accused should not be detained in the police station unless it is very important and that they should be produced in the court within 24 hours.
