Top NAS Features to Help You Make the Most Out of Your Money on Data

Synology specialises in Network Attached Storage (NAS) devices. Simply put, a NAS is like a mini server that’s optimised for data storage capabilities, and additional value-added functionality on top. Synology DiskStation NAS devices are specifically designed for home users and small offices.

Synology’s DiskStation models run on a Linux-based operating system popularly known as DiskStation Manager. The OS comes with a user-friendly interface that makes it as easy as operating any other desktop computer. If you’re looking to buy a new NAS device or have bought one recently, here are some useful tips and tricks to help you make the most out of it.

Remote Access to your data

If you’re just setting up a Synology NAS divide, set up QuickConnect. This feature lets you remote access the NAS device at your home or office without memorising an IP address or doing port-forwarding on your router. It’s extremely useful since most consumer ISPs don’t offer static IPs. So you can easily access your NAS device through a customised Synology account even if your ISP refreshes your WAN IP. QuickConnect also makes it extremely easy to find the NAS device on a local network and access your data from any portable device or browser connected to the internet.

Setting up QuickConnect is easy, and in case you haven’t done it during the initial installation you can simply go to Control Panel > QuickConnect > General. You’ll need to use a Synology account though. Once you’re done you’ll receive a unique web address to access your NAS device remotely.

Backup your Windows 10 machines

Synology NAS devices let you configure Windows 10 PCs to automatically backup over the local network. Even if you have multiple laptops and computers at home or in your small office, you can use Synology NAS devices to safely store all your backups on a single NAS.

Once you’ve set up the Synology NAS device on your network, you’ll need to set up your Windows 10 PC to send backups to it. To do this, open File History tool in Windows 10. Go to Backup settings > More options > See advanced settings > Add network location > Choose a folder on the NAS device > Select folder > OK. This tool will let you access a full history of all your files in case your system fails. You can also use the traditional Backup and Restore tool, and set it up to backup entire system images on the NAS drive.

In addition, for multi PC & cloud backup inquiries, you can also download Synology’s Active Backup Suite free from the Package Centre, which is a consolidated backup and instant recovery solution, powered by global deduplication to reduce the storage consumption across versions, devices, and platforms.
